Wedding Cake Q&A

I understand that ordering a large bespoke cake for your wedding can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about what you want when you reach out to cake makers; we’re here to help and guide you. Together, we’ll create a beautiful cake for your wedding day that provides just the right amount for your guests.

To assist you in choosing the perfect cake, I’ve compiled answers to the most common questions asked during wedding cake consultations.

How Much Do You Charge for your wedding cakes?

This is the most common question I receive, often accompanied by a picture of a cake with the query, “How much for this cake – same size?” These questions are nearly impossible to answer definitively. Since all wedding cakes are bespoke, the price of your design will depend on the hours required to create it, the cake flavor you choose, and the number of slices needed for your guests.

When looking at cake images, perceptions of size can vary between cake makers, each using their own portion guide. My wedding cake tiers are 6″ tall, serving slices of 1″ x 1″ x 6″. However, many other cake makers have tiers that are 4″ or 5″ tall, which affects their portion guide.

I have a pricing guide to give you starting prices for my cakes, these are for a light amount of decoration.

In order to give you a price please let me know the following details:

  • Your wedding date – to check availability in my diary

  • Estimated number of guests – To determine the best size cake for you

  • Any idea of cake style that you like – or don’t like – I will be able to send some design ideas to you that is tailored to what you like

  • The name of your venue – for delivery and set up of your cake on your wedding day

When Should we order our wedding cake?

I usually recommend ordering your wedding cake 12 to 18 months before your wedding day. Please note that I can only accept a limited number of orders per week.

Do we need to cater for all of our guests?

You don’t need to serve wedding cake to all of your guests. I typically recommend catering for about 70% of your guests and prioritizing your budget over supplying cake for everyone. If you plan to serve your wedding cake as dessert, then yes, we need to cater for all guests. However, most wedding cakes are served with the evening buffet, so catering for around 70% of your expected guests should be sufficient.

Do you offer consultations or post samples out

Yes, I offer wedding cake consultations via telephone or zoom call and posted cake samples for couples.

Most couples will choose to serve a different cake flavour per tier to give variety for their guests to choose from.

Do you offer dummy cake tiers?

Yes, of course, dummy cakes are an excellent solution if you want a large cake but don’t need to serve extensive platters of wedding cake to your guests. There is a common misconception that substituting edible cake tiers with dummy cakes will drastically lower the price of your cake. While there will be a reduction in cost, it won’t be significant. This is because the primary factor influencing the price of wedding cakes is the time required to create them.

For dummy cake tiers, instead of baking sponge cakes, we purchase polystyrene cake dummies. These dummies are then iced and decorated to the same level of detail as edible tiers, which takes the same amount of time. That said, if you want a larger cake on display at your wedding reception than you actually need, dummy cakes are a fantastic and popular option that will slightly reduce the price of your cake.

Will you deliver our cake to our venue on our wedding day

Yes, I offer a comprehensive delivery and setup service for your wedding cake. I will coordinate with your venue in the days leading up to your wedding to discuss the cake, any dietary or storage requirements, and inform them of my arrival time for setup. I deliver to all wedding venues in London, Kent, Surrey, Essex, and South London. If you have any decorations for the cake table, simply leave them with your venue, and I will ensure your wedding cake display is complete and looks fantastic before I leave.
